Hey everyone,

Welcome back for another bite to chew on.

Every brand is about to spend the next few weeks earning Instagram attention.

Most of that attention has a shelf life of about two days.

By mid-December the post is buried, the follower has moved on, and the only way to reach them again is to pay Meta for the privilege.

That is the part of BFCM nobody budgets for.

We have said it on the pod more times than we can count: a follower is rented, a subscriber is owned.

The brands that compound out of Q4 are the ones that turned seasonal attention into a channel they control.

Omnisend just shipped the cleanest fix we have seen for that leak.

Social Capture watches your Instagram comments and DMs for a keyword, replies instantly asking for an email, and adds the person to your Omnisend audience as a subscriber.

No link in bio, no landing page, no form.

The follower never leaves the app, and you never lose them to the algorithm again.

Let's get into it.

On the Menu:

  • Why the follower you earn in November is worth almost nothing to you by January unless you own the relationship

  • How Social Capture works, and the three settings that decide your completion rate

  • A four-week BFCM plan to turn Instagram comments into a list you can sell to all year

Turn Instagram Followers Into Email Subscribers
Automatically

Your Instagram following is the biggest audience you have that you cannot email. Every launch, every drop, every Black Friday teaser goes out hoping the algorithm feels generous that day.

That is the gap between getting noticed and owning the relationship.

Omnisend built Social Capture to close it.

Social Capture connects your Instagram business account to your Omnisend audience.

You pick a keyword, your followers comment it or DM it, and Social Capture messages them instantly asking for their email.

They reply, and they are on your list, tagged as an Instagram subscriber and ready for your welcome series.

  • Comment or DM to subscribe: Set a keyword like "VIP" or "early," choose whether comments, DMs, or both trigger it, and Social Capture handles the ask, the consent text, and the confirmation. It runs on your organic posts and Reels. No ad spend required.

  • Built for the moment of intent: The DM lands while they are still looking at your post, not three Reels later. Add a discount code as the thank-you, set a reminder for people who go quiet, and every new subscriber gets a tag so you can segment and welcome them separately.

  • A platform worth capturing into: 150,000+ brands run on Omnisend, with a 4.8/5 average Shopify rating and 300+ ecommerce integrations including Triple Whale, Canva, Smile.io, and AfterShip. Support is real humans, 24/7, with a 4-minute average response time. Coming from Klaviyo? Migration is free, done in 5 days, for a bill up to 35% lower.

The Rented Audience Problem

Instagram is the best discovery engine most DTC brands have.

It is also the worst place to keep a customer.

A follower is a crush, a subscriber sticks around

When someone follows you on Instagram, you get a number on your profile and almost nothing else.

Organic reach is whatever Meta decides it is that week, and the moment you want guaranteed delivery you are back in Ads Manager, paying to reach people who already raised their hand.

Email is the opposite.

You hold the address.

You pick the send time.

Nobody stands between you and the inbox taking a cut.

The reach you earn on Instagram is borrowed.

The reach you earn in email is still yours after the algorithm changes and the holiday rush is over.

You pay twice for the same person

Follow the money on one customer.

They discover you through a creator post and follow.

You paid for that follow, in content, creator fees, or media.

Two weeks later you launch a product, a fraction of your followers see it organically, and you boost or retarget to reach the rest.

You have now paid twice to reach the same person with the same news.

That is the tax on a rented audience, and it is steepest in Q4, when CPMs peak.

Every follower you could have converted to a subscriber in October is a follower you are paying November rates to reach.

The link-in-bio funnel leaks at every step

Most brands know this and have a fix: link in bio.

Look at what you are asking…

Leave the post.

Tap the profile.

Tap the link.

Land on a page.

Find the form.

Type the email.

Each step loses people.

The ones who finish were already motivated.

The casually interested, which is most of your audience, never do.

Social Capture removes the trip.

The ask happens inside a DM, in the app they are already using, while the post is still on their screen.

How Social Capture Works

The setup is small. The details are what separate a mediocre completion rate from a great one.

A keyword reply is the whole mechanic

In Omnisend, you create a keyword reply.

Name it, enter up to three keywords, and choose the trigger:

A comment on any post or Reel, a DM to your account, or both.

Keywords are not case-sensitive and fire when the word appears inside a longer message.

If your keyword is "access," then "How can I access the offer?" triggers the reply.

Then you write the DM that asks for the email and add the consent text explaining they are joining your marketing list.

You choose the tag applied to every new subscriber, write the confirmation message, and launch.

Only people who reply with a valid email get added.

Two requirements: a paid Omnisend plan and an Instagram business or creator account.

One current limitation: Social Capture collects email subscribers only, not SMS.

The three settings that decide your completion rate

First, the trigger.

Instagram only lets Social Capture message someone within 24 hours of their last message, so reminders depend on how the conversation started.

If the trigger was a DM, Social Capture can nudge the person when they go quiet.

If the trigger was a comment, the reminder only goes out if they reply to the first DM.

Omnisend's recommendation is to set DM as the default trigger and add comment as the second one.

Second, the ask and the consent text.

The consent line sits in the DM itself, so people know what they are agreeing to before they type an address.

Good for compliance, better for list quality.

You can include a discount code as the thank-you, or leave it out.

Third, the fallbacks.

If someone replies with something that is not an email, Social Capture sends your invalid-reply message, up to three times.

If they go quiet, it sends your reminder after a wait you set, up to 23 hours.

Omnisend's example reads: "Still here when you're ready. Reply with your email to get the code." Write these in your brand voice. They are what save a stalled conversation.

The Social Capture page shows a completion rate for each keyword reply.

Run two keywords with two offers and you have an A/B test on your Instagram capture without touching your site.

The tag is where the money is

An Instagram subscriber is not a popup subscriber. They came from a specific post, with a specific offer.

The tag lets you treat them that way.

Build a segment on it and point a dedicated welcome automation at that segment.

Greet them with the offer that got them commenting, in the same voice as the post.

You can run multiple keyword replies at once, each with its own keyword, incentive, tag, and automation.

"DROP" for the launch.

"GIFT" for the gift guide.

"VIP" for early access.

The Four-Week BFCM Play

Black Friday is November 27. Here is how we would run Social Capture between now and then.

Week one: set up and seed

Connect Instagram and build your first keyword reply around your strongest BFCM hook, which for most brands is early access.

"Comment EARLY and we'll DM you the link before anyone else."

Build the welcome automation for that tag so the first email delivers exactly what the post promised.

Then test the full flow from a personal account before it goes live.

Weeks two and three: make every post a capture point

You were already going to post a gift guide, a product teaser, and whatever your creators are shooting. Attach a keyword to each one.

The gift guide gets "GIFT."

The teaser gets "DROP."

Creators tell their audience to DM your brand the keyword, which routes their followers into your list instead of their comments.

None of this costs extra media.

And it matters more this year: Omnisend's research finds Americans expect to spend 30% less this BFCM than last.

As Žilvinas Lešinskas, Omnisend's VP of Product and Engineering, put it in the launch announcement:

"BFCM brings hype and attention, but that doesn't last."

If baskets are smaller, the list you build in November is the margin you earn back in Q1.

BFCM weekend and after: the audience you keep

During the sale, your Instagram cohort gets the campaign in their inbox, not just in a feed showing them forty other sales.

In December, when the post is buried, you are still in the inbox.

In January, that tagged segment is your first clean read on who came from Instagram and what they bought.

Stack it with the rest of the toolkit.

Social Capture covers Instagram.

Omnisend's new Forms+ gamified popups (Scratch Card, Mystery Box, and Quiz, on the Pro plan) do the same job for first-time visitors on your site.

And if you are paying Klaviyo prices for the platform underneath it all, Omnisend migrates you for free in 5 days, for a bill up to 35% lower.

Sum It Up

BFCM revenue is the scoreboard.

The list is the asset.

Social Capture is how you stop renting the audience you spent the whole season earning.

  • On the rented audience: Instagram gets you noticed, but you pay to reach the same follower twice and the link-in-bio funnel leaks at every tap. Email is the only channel where the reach you earn stays yours.

  • On the mechanics: A keyword reply, a DM asking for the email, a consent line, and a tag. Use DM as the default trigger, write the fallbacks in your voice, and point a dedicated welcome automation at the Instagram segment.

  • On the BFCM play: Set up in week one, attach a keyword to every post after that, and walk out of Cyber Monday with a cohort you can email all year instead of a follower spike that fades by Christmas.

The attention is coming whether you capture it or not.

The only question is whether, on December 1, those people are a number on your profile or a segment in your account.
